According to astrology, Makar Sankranti is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn from Sagittarius. According to astronomy, when the Sun changes from Dakshinayan to Uttarayan, the festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated on that day. This year the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January.

According to the scriptures, when the Sun remains in Dakshinayan, that period is called the night of the gods and the six months of Uttarayan are called days. Dakshinayan is considered a symbol of negativity and darkness and Uttarayan is considered a symbol of positivity and light. It is believed that on the day of Makar Sankranti, the Gods descend on earth to receive the food given in the Yagya and through this path the virtuous souls leave their bodies and enter heaven etc. The charity done on this day is very fruitful.

Bhishma Pitamah had left his body on the day of Makar Sankranti: Donating pure ghee and blanket on the day of Makar Sankranti helps in attaining salvation. During the Mahabharata period, Bhishma Pitamah had chosen Makar Sankranti to sacrifice his body. It is told in Geeta that the person who sacrifices his body in Shukla Paksha of Uttarayan gets salvation.

Surya himself goes to the house of his son Shani to meet him: According to Sanatan beliefs, on the day of Makar Sankranti, Lord Surya himself goes to the house of his son Shani to meet him. Since Shani Dev is the lord of Capricorn, the influence of Saturn gets weakened by the mere entry of Sun in his house. Because no negativity can survive in front of sunlight. It is believed that by worshiping the Sun on Makar Sankranti and making donations related to it, all the defects caused by Saturn are removed.

The blessing of Sun and Saturn is associated with Makar Sankranti: Yamraj was very sad to see his father Suryadev suffering from leprosy. Yamraj performed penance to free Suryadev from leprosy, but Surya got angry and burnt Shani Maharaj’s house, Kumbh, which is called the zodiac sign of Saturn. Due to this, Shani and his mother Chhaya were facing hardships.

Seeing his step mother and brother Shani in pain, Yamraj explained a lot to father Surya for their welfare. Then Sun God said that whenever he comes to Capricorn, the second house of Saturn, he will fill Saturn’s house with wealth. Shani Maharaj was pleased and said that whoever worships Sun God on Makar Sankranti will not have to suffer during the period of Saturn.

Mythological beliefs related to Makar Sankranti: According to the scriptures, on the day of Makar Sankranti, Goddess Ganga, which emerged from the thumb of Lord Vishnu, followed Bhagiratha and went through Kapil Muni’s ashram and went into the ocean. The sons of Bhagiratha’s ancestor Maharaj Sagar were granted salvation. That is why on this day a huge fair is organized at Kapil Muni’s ashram in Gangasagar, Bengal.

Scientific reason: The scientific reason for Makar Sankranti is that from this day, changes in nature begin due to the Sun becoming Uttarayan. People start getting relief from winter due to the Uttarayan of the Sun. The entire year is equally divided into two parts, Uttarayan and Dakshinayan. The zodiac sign in which the Sun’s orbit changes is called the transition period. Most of the part of our Earth lies north of the equator i.e. in the Northern Hemisphere, hence Makar Sankranti has been given special importance.
