Why Is Devuthani’s Birthday Celebrated Only? – Being very pleased with the great sacrifice of Barbarik (Khatu Shyam), Shri Krishna gave a boon to Barbarik that in Kaliyuga you will be known by the name Shyam. After granting the boon, his head was buried in Khatu Nagar (present-day Sikar district of Rajasthan state), hence he is called Khatu Shyam Baba. It is believed that a cow came to that place and was spontaneously releasing milk from her breasts every day.

Later, when the place was excavated, the head was found there, which was handed over to a Brahmin for a few days. Once the king of Khatu city was inspired in a dream to build a temple and to adorn that head in the temple. So a temple was built at that place and on the Ekadashi of Kartik month the head was decorated in the temple. That is why the birthday of Shri Khatushyam ji is always celebrated on Devuthani Ekadashi.

Who Was Shri Khatu Shyam Ji?

According to the scriptures, Shri Khatu Shyam ji is believed to be related to the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Bhima, son of Pandu. Shri Khatu Shyam ji was very powerful.

According to mythological beliefs, when the Pandavas were roaming from one forest to another to save their lives, Bhima encountered Hidimba. Later Hidimba gave birth to a son who was named Ghatotkacha. Later Ghatotkacha had a son who was named Barbarik. Barbarik later came to be known as Khatu Shyam.

Why Is The Story Of Khatu Shyam Baba Famous?

During the war of Mahabharata, Barbarik asked permission from Shri Krishna to participate. But Shri Krishna knew the outcome of the war. In such a situation, Shri Krishna asked for donation from Barbarik and asked for his head in it. Barbarik donated his head to him without any delay.

Pleased with the great sacrifice of Barbarik (Khatu Shyam), Shri Krishna gave a boon to Barbarik that in Kaliyuga you will be called Shyam. After granting the boon, his head was buried in Khatu Nagar (present-day Sikar district of Rajasthan state), hence he is called Khatu Shyam Baba.

It is believed that a cow had come to that place and was releasing milk from her breasts on its own every day. Later, when the place was excavated, the head was found there, which was handed over to a Brahmin for a few days. Once the king of Khatu Nagar got inspiration in his dream to build a temple and beautify it in Sheesh Mandir. So a temple was built at that place and the Sheesh temple was decorated on the Ekadashi of Kartik month. Therefore, the birth anniversary of Shri Khatushyam ji is always celebrated on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi.
